About FE Prep
Why I Built FE Prep
FE Prep was built by a practicing electrical engineer, during a real FE exam journey. It was not assembled after the fact and marketed later.
Founder
Hi, I'm Chris F.
I'm a distribution planning electrical engineer currently preparing for the FE exam.
I started building FE Prep because I wanted a study platform that adapted to my weaknesses, helped me become more familiar with the FE Reference Handbook, and tracked actual readiness instead of simply counting correct answers.
As I studied, I kept finding areas where traditional FE prep platforms fell short. Rather than continue working around those limitations, I started building the features I wished existed.
Many of the tools inside FE Prep were created to solve problems I personally encountered while preparing for the exam.
The background
Studying for the FE, years after graduating
Like many engineers, I graduated several years before sitting for the FE. Coming back to it while working full time meant balancing a job, life, and exam preparation, and the study tools I found felt dated and disconnected from how I actually needed to study.
I wanted practice that adapted to where I was weak, not a fixed list of questions. I wanted to get genuinely comfortable navigating the FE Reference Handbook, because that's what you use on exam day. And I wanted an honest read on whether I was ready, not just a tally of how many questions I'd answered correctly.
Built while studying
Built during preparation, not after
FE Prep wasn't created after passing the exam and then turned into a product. It was built while I was actively preparing for the FE.
Each feature was added to solve a real study frustration as I hit it. Handbook integration, adaptive practice, analytics, saved questions, onboarding, readiness tracking, and the exam preparation tools all exist because they were personally useful while I was preparing, not because a feature list said they should.

Our approach
How FE Prep works, and why you can trust it
A straightforward look at where the questions come from, what your progress means, and how your information is handled.
Original content
Original educational content
Every question on FE Prep is original. Questions are developed from internally reviewed engineering templates rather than copied from any exam or commercial question bank.
These templates are written to align with the official FE Electrical and Computer exam specification, so practice stays relevant to the topics the exam actually covers.
Numerical values, engineering scenarios, and answer choices are varied so that practice reinforces the underlying concept instead of a memorized result.
FE Prep intentionally avoids reproducing copyrighted examination questions or proprietary commercial preparation material.
Question design
How questions are created
FE Prep is built around concept-first learning: the goal is to understand the engineering principle, not to recognize a specific question.
Each engineering template is tied to a clear learning objective and to the relevant sections of the FE Reference Handbook, so practicing also builds familiarity with the reference you use on exam day.
From a single concept, scenarios and numerical values are varied to produce fresh practice that reinforces the same underlying principle from different angles.
Your progress
How progress is measured
Your readiness reflects an estimate of how prepared you are right now — a current snapshot, not a fixed grade.
It improves through consistent practice, and it becomes more accurate as you answer more questions and the platform has more information to work with.
Analytics are there to help you see your strengths and the areas worth more attention, so you can focus your study time where it helps most.
Privacy & security
Privacy & security
Your study progress is stored securely, and your personal information is protected.
Sign-in uses modern, passwordless email authentication, so there is no password for you to manage or for us to store.
We continue to invest in the reliability and security of the platform as it grows.
Independent
Independent educational platform
NextStepPE is an independent FE exam preparation platform. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
FE® and Fundamentals of Engineering® are registered trademarks of NCEES and are used solely to identify the examination for which this platform provides preparation.
All practice questions, explanations, study materials, and educational content are independently created by NextStepPE, based on publicly available engineering principles, and are not reproduced from official NCEES examination materials or the FE Reference Handbook.
Users should consult the official NCEES FE Reference Handbook for the authoritative examination reference.
Continuous improvement
Continuously refined
FE Prep is continually refined. Content and templates go through engineering review, and the platform is updated as it is used.
User feedback directly informs what gets improved next, and ongoing work focuses on accuracy, clarity, and reliability over time.
Supporting FE Prep
FE Prep is currently free to use
If the platform has helped you prepare for the FE exam, optional contributions help support continued development and future improvements.
